Agricultural Engineering

Department Overview

The department of Agricultural Engineering is one of the pioneer Engineering field in Ethiopia. In Early 1960s, the department is opened in Alamaya College of Agriculture with other three agricultural departments. Now the Department is running two post graduate programs with the 5-year undergraduate program. The undergraduate program has been restructured multiple times until it gains the current shape in curriculum. Even now the department is working on the curriculum for the betterment of the program. The department mainly focuses on the area of agricultural machinery and mechanization which is the one third input for the modern agriculture. Even if the machinery section in the country has not been giving much attention, the department is striving to help the back warded agriculture to gradually change into modern and fully automated agriculture.

Basically the courses offered in the department focuses on the area of agricultural machine design and maintenance, design of agricultural products preservation equipment, design of farm structures, Rural electrification and installation, Renewable energy and rural technology, design of Irrigation structures, soil and water conservation and others.
