Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering


Department Overview

Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering  is one of the ten departments currently run under Haramaya Institute of Technology. It is consorted with two sister departments under the School of Water Resources & Environmental Engineering (SWREE). Currently, the department offers a regular five year bachelor degree; M.Sc. program in Irrigation Engineering, and Soil & Water Conservation Engineering; and PhD in Irrigation Engineering, and Soil & Water Conservation Engineering.


The vision of Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering (WRIE) program is to produce qualified and (inter)nationally competent professionals in sustainable development and management areas of water resources.

Graduate profile

Graduate of Water Resources & Irrigation Engineering can (1) design, construct and manage surface & pressurized irrigation, and drainage systems; (2) design, construct, operate, and manage hydraulic structures, for the purposes of flood control, reservoirs, and hydro-power plants; (3) provide consultancy services in any water works engineering projects, natural resource management, and governance; (4) assume leadership in the management and governance of land and water resources at project level as well as at broader institutional levels; and (5) involve in policy formulation, research, training, community services, and governance of land & water resources in collaboration with government and civil societies.
