Department Overview

Background

The development of water resources which are in line with environmental sustainability must be a central element of the country’s strategy to improve the quality of life of the people. In light of this, the Government of Ethiopia has developed many year Water Sector Development Programme which includes the following program components: water supply and sewerage, irrigation and drainage, hydropower development, water resources and capacity building. Concerning water supply and sewerage, the country has given due attention to improving the situation by providing adequate and sustainable water supply and sewerage systems. This would improve the health conditions of citizens and release labor for productive engagement in other socio-economic activities. Particularly, the burden on women population, who spend a lot of their time carrying water for domestic uses, would greatly be reduced.

Ethiopia has a population size more than 90million. The citizens of the country need to access to basic water requirements for drinking, washing, cooking, bathing as a human right as per the UN convention. The MDG of the United Nations was also designed targeting such a problem. The current water supply coverage for such a big population is only 61% and the current sanitation coverage is around 45%. The urbanization and industrialization is growing fast in the country and the corresponding pollution production is also increasing. This entails that the problem is critical and hence, the Water Supply and Environmental Engineering is designed to address such a vital problem.

Water Supply and Environmental Engineering profession is more and more demanding as domestic water supply coverage is low in the country and a number of environmentally polluting human activities are growing. A lot of industrial and domestic wastes are produced daily and these wastes if they are not handled properly, they are severely polluting the environment. The Water Supply and Environmental engineer is expected to handle these vast problems to seek engineering solutions so that the environment will be highly conducive to human habitation.

VISION

The vision of WSEE is to produce qualified and competent professionals in the area of Water Supply, Urban Drainage, Waste Water Treatment and Management, Solid Waste Management and Environmental Pollution Control.

Water Supply and Environmental Engineering profile

Water Supply and Environmental Engineering was established in 2014 under former Institute of Technology with three M.Sc. holder academic staffs and forty-eights (48) first batch students in bachelors’ degrees. It is consorted with two sister departments under the School of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering (WREE). The department still has no graduate students and but have the fourth-year students in Water Supply and Environmental Engineering program under Haramaya Institute of Technology in Haramaya University.
